Simple. Make a good, long-term friend and if there is something more then it will hardly be a problem of trust. Good friend = trust = potential of something more and if the feeling is not mutual the friendship will always be there, you don't lose a friend for being honest but if you do then he wasn't really your friend to begin with, staying still will only make it ever harder to actually do something. Although even with all that relationships can wither down if both let it happen.
